Running Terry's Money Home
Nearly 100 SD43 elementary students took Terry's Money HOME!
Students left from Coast Salish a little after 9am to begin their journey to Terry Fox Secondary (video). Amid cheers and with their Coquitlam RCMP escorts, students ran to Smiling Creek to pick up more students. From Smiling Creek it was down to Leigh, more cheering, and a brief water stop before continuing. It was on to Irvine as the group grows at each school they visit. From Irvine students made their way to James Park for a hearty welcome and additional runners. Looping back to Birchland for high-fives and on to Cedar as they approached the final leg. From Cedar the group, now nearly 100 strong, ran the final stretch to Terry Fox Secondary and the welcoming crowd. Thanks to the Fox leadership group, the elementary students were greated with cheers, water, and snacks at the finish line, as well as supportive parents, teachers, fellow students and Port Coquitlam Fire Rescue. What a morning! In total, students that ran all the way from Coast Salish to Fox Secondary covered 10.9km this morning!
Coast Salish students raised over $23,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation with their Terry Fox Run fundraising, earning them the top spot in the province - congratulations Coast Salish! The student runners presented the Terry Fox Foundation a cheque for $41,243 but that total continues to rise (donate below!) as donations are still coming in.
Thank you to Coast Salish Principal Frank Pearse for taking the lead on this fantastic event, as well all the SD43 staff that helped and took part. Coquitlam RCMP was extremely helpful in keeping the runners safe and their support was much appreciated. Thanks again to Port Coquitlam Fire Rescue and to the Fox Leadership students at the finish line - your support was appreciated along with the water, snacks, and the Terry Fox temporary tattoos.
