Welcome to Canada and to School District 43 (Coquitlam)

SD43 is pleased to welcome all new families to our communities and schools including Syrian refugees. We have a long and successful history of serving refugees. We are well practiced and have expertise and services in place.

For Syrian refugees, the important first steps to integrate into our schools will be:

  1. Contact our Arabic speaking SWIS workers (Settlement Workers in Schools) by calling Hadil Fonouni - 604-349-7706, email hfonouni@sd43.bc.ca or Atania Kharma - 604-314-0841, email akharma@sd43.bc.ca.
  2. An initial assessment will be done by our SWIS workers.
  3. A more detailed assessment will then take place to help students integrate into their neighbourhood schools as soon as possible.

Learn more about our programs for immigrants and refugees here.

Extreme Weather Closure Information

Schools are not routinely closed due to snow or other inclement weather conditions. All schools in School District 43 (Coquitlam) will remain OPEN, if at all possible, during winter weather, including snowfall.

However, on occasion, a district-wide or partial-district closure is required due to extreme weather. Partial-district closures affecting individual schools may occur due to the very different geography within our school district. If there is a partial-district closure affected schools will be identified.

While the District tries to make the best decision with the information available, the
weather does change quickly. Therefore, when schools remain open, decisions to stay
at home during challenging weather conditions should be made by each family.

The SD43 website homepage is the official primary source of SD43 information during an emergency, inclement weather, power outage or similar incident. Check the SD43 website homepage often during an emergency, inclement weather, power outage or similar incident for the STATUS BANNER and click its main title to learn more.
