Camas Knowledge Keeper

"The camas bulb is an important food item for our people. This is my family’s camas field. We maintain it by weeding and transplanting bulbs into the field. We make sure not to overharvest so that the remaining plants reproduce for next year. After harvest, we sometimes burn the fields to enrich the soil and remove unwanted plants. Right after harvesting bulbs, we cook them in a pit oven in the ground, using heated rocks, water and a cover of leaves. When they are ready, they are a little sweet and quite delicious. We can dry them for storage or for trading. Task: I've given you a digging stick. Work with others in your group and use it to harvest no more than half of the field. For every plant you harvest, re-plant one bulb. Pull any weeds you find and plant a bulb in its place. Take your harvested bulbs to the Plant Elder in the big house for cooking later. Warning: watch out for death camas. It looks a lot like camas, but it will make you very sick."
