Aboriginal Education

School District No. 43 (Coquitlam) is the core territory for the Kwikwetlem First Nation and lies within the shared traditional territories of the Tsleil-Waututh, Katzie, Musqueam, Squamish, and Sto:lo Nation.

The Aboriginal Education Program provides a wide array of resources and opportunities to enhance the learning environment for all Aboriginal learners - First Nations, Metis and Inuit.  The schools provide the daily structure and supports. The Aboriginal Education staff, together with the families, community, and classroom teachers, respond to the unique educational needs of the Aboriginal students in the school district.  Coquitlam's Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement provides the goals, strategies and structures as a framework for the success of our students.

The Suwa’lkh Learning Centre

Suwa’lkh, meaning ‘First Beginning’ in hul'qumi'num, includes culturally relevant curriculum to support Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students within the district who are struggling to succeed. The program includes support from teachers, youth workers, support workers, community members, parents, and Elders. Inclusion of local knowledge, culture, and traditions will help students connect with their urban community.

For questions about the Learning Centre please contact Laurie Ebenal, Principal of Aboriginal Education at  604.945.7386.
